It’s your birthday soon and I always get reminiscent around this time of year. I can’t quite believe you’ve been part of our lives for almost 7 years. I remember the first moment you entered this world – the midwife passed you up to me and you let out this huge, heart-warming cry. My precious baby. That moment changed my whole life, forever.
I’m so thankful you made me a Mama. It’s the job I was born to do – only I didn’t know it until you came along.
I’d love to say I teach you so much but the truth is you teach me more than I could ever teach you.
You are so kind and caring. You have strength and determination and you are wise far beyond your years. You are so funny, genuinely funny! There’s not a day that goes by that you don’t have my crying with laughter!
The world is a better place for having you in it.
You are my sunshine
When you were a baby, I used to sing “You are my Sunshine” to you every morning when you woke up.
One day, when you’re older, I’ll tell you about how you brought sunshine to our world. I’ll tell you about the heartache and sadness that Daddy and I went through before you came along. About how you were a beacon of light that changed everything. We lost babies before you and there was a time when I thought I’d never see anything other than darkness. But then you were born. And you cried out. And you were really here – my heart; my everything; my sunshine.
So this year I vow to sing this song to you again (even though you may roll your eyes at me!)
My promises to you
I promise to always love you. First and foremost! I’ve got your back baby and I’ll always take your side. Our home will always be filled with love – and laughter. Lots and lots of laughter. This will always be a safe place for you and you’re always welcome here, no matter how old you get.
I promise to keep teaching you about music and dancing around the kitchen with you, singing our hearts out!
I promise to spend time with you: reading books; playing lego; having drawing competitions – whatever you decide, I’m in! I promise to always make time for you no matter how busy I get.
I promise to always take photos of you! That’s a weird one I know but here’s why. I promise to always capture your childhood in an honest and authentic way, so you can look back on the photos I take and know that you are so important to me. So you’ll know that your life isn’t just a series of fake social media posts – but it’s the true story of who you are at this time of your life. There will be smiles and probably tears but it’ll always be your story – and your story is the most important story I will ever tell.
So what do I wish for you this year?
It’s the same every year. I wish for another year filled with laughter. Enjoy your life baby girl. So often things will come along that you can’t control. Sadness will enter your world and I wish I could protect you from that. I wish you never had to feel an ounce of hurt, so long as you live. But that’s not possible. So instead, I hope I can teach you the healing power of laughter and to enjoy the many, many beautiful moments that will come your way.
Always be you – your kind, funny, strong and beautiful self. Stand tall and know that I’ll always be standing right there by your side – brimming with so much pride that you’re my daughter.
I can’t wait to see what this year and the rest of your life has in store for you baby girl.
Love always, your Mama x
